We are on a very tight schedule during the weekdays, especially when it comes to a twin toddlers bedtime routine. From the time our little ones come home to day until bedtime, there’s about 2 hours to eat dinner, wash up, bath, quiet play, then bed. In the mornings it’s equally rushed and the timings vary since our little alarm clock is lil Missy.
During the day, Little Mister & Little Missy love daycare and get glowing reports from their teachers. Both M&M are pretty tight and mostly play together. Occasionally lil Missy will bug her brother by stealing his toys, etc. Other days she will feed him with a spoon and bring him his hat and shoes for going outside. And the food! They love the gourmet toddler-sized meals that Chef D cooks at daycare. Little Missy often asks for seconds!
In a typical day they eat about 6 times a day.
7:30 a.m.: light breakfast and milky at home
8:30 a.m.: breakfast at daycare
11:30 a.m.: lunch at daycare
3:00 p.m.: snack at daycare
5:00 p.m.: snack in the car when Dada picks them up (aka Mr. Mama)
5:30 p.m.: light dinner at home
7:00 p.m.: light snack (if needed) and milky before bed
Ideally we’d like to give them dinner right at 5pm. The next best thing is the cartime snack, and luckily they are so hungry they’ll eat anything, even fruit. (although they prefer goldfish crackers of wheat puffs anyday)
Mr. Mama and myself have a good system for the evenings now. I arrive home about 10 minutes before their expected arrival and proceed to warm up food which was prepared the night before. All the food is placed on their special divided plates and put on their little table, ready for devouring. Lately they have been protesting against the highchairs since at daycare they have the freedom to roam around, bounce up and down on their little chairs, even break out into a little dance if they feel like it! So we brought in their little picnic table from outside and find that makes for a happier mealtime for all.
By the time Mr. Mama and myself sit down to eat, the little ones are done. (isn’t that always the way?) So what follows is a lot of speed eating while they beg for food off our plate and run around the dinner table. After dinner, I clean up the kitchen while Mr. Mama takes lil M&M upstairs for their bath. If I’m lucky, I’ll get a chance to relax for a few minutes while I hear the giggles from upstairs (and sometimes shrieks from Missy if she’s overtired).
After bathtime, I head upstairs with milk and a small snack (which I leave on the stairs until needed), and play puzzles or megablocks. This is the most enjoyable part of the evening, when we can relax with our little ones and look for signs they are ready for bed. Lil Missy loves being read to, and her favourite book to wind down is “Goodnight Moon”. Lil Mister loves focusing on his puzzles and has gotten very good at putting them together!
Next, we each grab a baby and go into their individual rooms, put on their mobile music, have some cuddles before placing them in their cribs, and pray for a good night.
